The food that I eat is very simple. I either eat potatoes, or rice for carbs. I eat lots of vegetables, because they help fill me up. Maybe I’ll eat, you know, a giant bowl of zucchini and stir fried vegetables. And then I eat a lot of game meat. So lean meats like wild boar or venison.
Which I’m guessing you hunt?
I’ve been working harder on trying to source my food from the land. Right now in California, we have a pretty aggressive hog issue. It means you’re not going against the ecosystem, you’re taking from the wild based on what legit biologists and scientists are deciding.
And all that time outdoors hunting is an easy in to woodcutting…
I was born and raised in an area where heating your home with firewood is just standard. A lot of people live that way. Look man, that’s just how it goes in the forest. It’s a beautiful place that we all care about and people see me splitting wood and assume I’m contributing to deforestation. But we’re going after diseased or threatening trees and removing them. If you don’t do that, this place gets very unhealthy.
So if you see me splitting wood, it means I took the tree, and not only an ethical way, but in a way that was permitted by our National Forest Service. And in a way that benefits our forests. So yeah, I care a lot. I care a lot about my ecosystem.
So what’s the story behind making your videos?
Covid shut down everything. So there were a few moments when I was worried about my career: athletes couldn’t train. Why would they need me? So I was trying to cover my own ass and make sure I had a different source of income, essentially. And when that happened. I just started making videos.
I didn’t realise how many people really enjoyed it. Look, you could attribute all this success to wood chopping. You know, you could point a finger at sexualising it, but there’s a way to make watchable content no matter what you’re doing.
Are clothes a big factor in looking and feeling good for you?
Of course. I’d describe my style as 1960s and ’70s Americana. A lot of denim. Wrangler’s. A lot of Levi’s. Converse. I dress like that in my work videos but also in real life, and I care about my clothes. It’s all pretty American workwear-y, with Carhartt jackets and Danner boots. But I think the most important part of style is having a fresh haircut. Every 10 days. So instead of spending my cash on clothes, I spend it on that.
And when you’re not cutting wood or running trails, what else makes you feel good?
I do a little bit of cliff jumping, which I know is kind of a strange concept. But up here in the Sierra Nevadas, we have a lot of swimming holes with rocks to jump off. Do you have that?
Yeah, we do. It’s called tombstoning, I guess.
Yeah, like that! You get a hike, set-up a picnic, jump off the rocks. I’ve actually never been to a nightclub. I enjoy small get togethers; just hanging out and listening to music, drinking a few beers and BBQ.
And jumping off cliffs!
Yeah! It’s exhilarating.
